Commercial Interior Design Portfolio - Dining Halls

Before

This space was previously used as the Community Room, a location where the residents perform a variety of tasks such as physical therapy, bible readings, meetings, arts and crafts, choir practice and movie showings. The residents that reside in this facility have a wide range of physical conditions. Which cause some residents to need the assistance of a wheelchair, walker, cane and electric scooter. Due to the increase in physical conditions the distance to the existing dining room creates an intense challenge for many of the residents which cause them to have meals delivered to their private room instead of dining with other residents. Our requirements for the project are to develop a space that serves the current activities that take place in the Community Room as well as create a full service Dining Room, flexibility is a important factor we need to implement. The staff has encouraged the residents to make selections and suggestions of their own on overall palette and layout of the space.

After

The Dining Room is an entirely flexible space for the residents. The dining chairs have casters on the front legs of the chairs to assist in movement and standard legs on the back of the chair to provide stability. The chair seats have a Naugahyde vinyl with a whimsical sage and butter crème fabric on the backs. The table tops are a brushed look laminate with laminate edging for easy cleaning of paints or ketchup. The flooring is a commercial grade low maintenance vinyl in the main dining area. The serving line has the ability to connect together, or be used separately and all pieces are on castors for complete flexibility. In the television area there is carpet, the same dining chairs are used so they can be easily moved for physical therapy, or yoga sessions that take place. We updated their audio and visual electronic with a 53” flat screen television, surround sound, DVD, VCR capabilities as well as a radio and a microphone system that taps into the surround sound speakers. The residents were very involved with selections and it became an interactive project. The result is a flexible space with a refreshed “Café” look as commented by the residents.
